New Short Story: “The Storyteller’s Apprentice”

I have a new short story up at The Hanging Garden:

THE STORYTELLER’S APPRENTICE

There’s a story you have wrapped around your heart. Everybody has one: a single, secret story that’s both lock and key. If you ever hear that story, it will feel deep and bright and familiar and true as the summer sky. It’s a joy that will stay with you till the end of your days, warm and bright for you to cup your hands around on the darkest days.

And the person clever or lucky enough to tell you the story? It won’t matter who he is, the cruelest king or the meanest, most common drunk. He’ll hold your heart in his hand like an acorn. That’s why people fear storytellers as much as they love them.

New Short Story: “The Lamps Thereof Are Fire and Flames”

I’m thrilled to have a short story published in the latest issue of Uncanny Magazine! You can read it on the website, or purchase the entire issue as an ebook. (Kindle|Weightless Books)

THE LAMPS THEREOF ARE FIRE AND FLAMES

The second queen forbade any telling of tales or writing of histories. Sufficient to the day is the evil thereof. Let him that breaks this law see his own hands cut off before he loses his eyes.

You have taken so much more from me, my Queen. But I will tell my story anyway.

New Short Story: “CUT HER OUT IN LITTLE STARS”

I have a new short story up at The Hanging Garden:

CUT HER OUT IN LITTLE STARS

Three sisters fell in love with a star. (This is not quite true. But wait and listen to my story.)

They lived very near the edge of the world, where the rivers run faster and faster until they fall roaring off the rim, into the infinite void. Where birds with feathers of smoke and fire build nests, and hiss at passers-by as they brood over their eggs in smoldering trees.

Where stars, sometimes, come down to visit the earth.

Short Story: “OF THE DEATH OF KINGS”

I have a new short story up at The Hanging Garden:

OF THE DEATH OF KINGS

They like their princesses buried, in this kingdom.

Some kingdoms encase them in crystal, others sink them in pools, still others leave them lying on silk-draped beds. But here in Sendrava, they bury their princesses under six feet of earth, and they plant rose-bushes or apple trees over them.

It’s all one to the Adjudicator.
